SOS Children’s Villages Tanzania to host a fundraising dinner on 25th June, 2011 at Kempinski Kilimanjaro Hotel - PRESS RELEASE

 

SOS Children Village is an independent non-governmental and non-denominational social development organization founded by Herman Gmeiner in Austria in 1949. It is currently in 132 countries with over 500 Villages. It started to work in Tanzania in 1991, initially registered as two separate National Associations; SOS Children's Villages Tanzania and Zanzibar but now operates under one National Office.

 

Customer Passion Point Limited is a Business Support Services Company organised and operated in Tanzania. They believe in cause marketing, appreciate the value it creates for both the implementers of the cause, the government, business organisations and individuals who believe and support humanitarian causes.

 

Ms. Rita Kahurananga speaking at the conference explained that the SOS Village currently supports 387 children & youths in 3 villages and 1415 children in families of origin. The Villages are located in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar. The Dar Village was established in 2007. It is located along Sam Nujoma Road Opposite the University of Dar Es Salaam. The Village has 13 family houses in which 123 children are cared for. 99 of these children attend community primary and secondary schools; 22 attend Kindergarten located within the village; 2 are still underage.

 

She explained that the SOS Kindergarten, one of the Village facilities has the capacity to provide early childhood education to 90 but currently has 78 children, 56 of whom are from the community around the Village. 22 of them from poor families are given full scholarships by the organization.

 

Rita also talked about the Family Strengthening Program, which provides essential services to poor children at risk of losing parental care in Temeke, Ilala and Kinondoni.  The program currently supports 200 children in 51 families of origin. The support given includes education, health, nutritional and capacity building in Income Generating Activities.

 

Rita talked about Funding of the SOS Children’s Villages, which is mostly by external donors. These have drastically reduced over the last few years due to the recession in the world economy. She explained that it has necessitated the need to source funds locally to enable the organization to carry out the projects planned for the year. Local fundraising will also help the organization to develop strong local roots.

 

To facilitate the fundraising exercise on a long term basis, Rita announced SOS Children’s Village’s partnership with Customer Passion Point Limited to enable the village raise up to Tsh100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Shillings) to executive the different projects planned for 2011. CPPL is expected to provide marketing, PR and Media support to create, quality awareness for the activities of The SOS Children’s Village.

 

Rita also announced, The SOS Children’s Village is celebrating it’s 40th Anniversary in Africa this year 2011. To commemorate this event, they are coming up with a Fundraising Dinner which will be held on June 25th, 2011. Expected to be represented at this auspicious event, would be corporate oraginsations, Government agencies and dignitaries, diplomatic corps, funding agencies, churches, schools, and members of the public. This is to enable the SOS Children’s Village to further engage with the public with the sole purpose of building long term relationships.
